There isn't much accurate information on the origin of the statue. It is said that ancient Buddhist traditions included the preservation of dead Masters to be seen as divine powers in their afterlife.

The statue from what I found is just tinted with gold. To discover if the whole thing is made out of gold would require damaging the statue, therefore we will never truly know.
