In an era where the country with the most innovative weaponry was seen as the better one, Germany would not allow itself to fall behind in the arms race that was going on between the Russians and Americans. Even if they were still looked upon by the communists after the second world war, they were allowed to develop their army.
The German army wanted it’s pride back just as in the second world war where they were known for having the best tanks (at least until the late period of the war). They have learned that size does not necessarily raise an efficient combatant in battle nor power. There was a need for something that would make the enemy put their guard down.
The project was first supported by the British, however, as the cold was has intensified the Americans took over to work on not only a tank but also a relationship with the germans in case the eventual world war 3 would break out between them and the Russians.
This is the idea that brought them to having two similar size and caliber cannons without a turret. The point was that you shot toward the enemy (considered a normal tank) and miss then the enemy would shot a shell which would, in theory, bounce on the front armor at which point the enemy would have to reload but they…
