I didn't find a specific explanation for this, this is defently another mystery here. Many say it is from the powerful impact, others say that this is the prove it was actually a weapon that caused the whole event. I think that the land is still affected to the point that trees are not able to grow as the dirt is incrusted from beneath, however that is only a speculation.
