Artillery Isn’t a Weapon, It’s a Weapons System
Sharing the right knowledge
There is a big confusion that has been created by the share of wrong information through history. People tend to have different views of what artillery is. You need to understand that Artillery is not a weapon but a weapon system that has been first used in the early 13th century when the first generations of cannons were implemented in the middle of medieval times.
Artillery is best described as more of a military strategy to combat the offense of enemy units. The cannons would be set one next to another so that the volley of shots would be more concentrated in one area, therefore it would be more accurate and effective. The cannons would be placed far from the front line and fired from a long distance of at least 1 kilometer away. The more advanced the cannons became the further they were kept from the front line.
The coordinance would be given by a commander from the frontline to the artillery group and he would also tell the artillery group the type of shell to fire and how many volleys to fire. the artillery team was quite vital in many defensive situations as they would end up not only lowering the morale of the enemy but also do most of the killing.
